The Korean 10-step skincare routine has made every beauty enthusiast rave about its transformative effects on their skin. To be honest, this skincare routine is worth raving about as it addresses a wide range of skin concerns. But people with oily skin are quite hesitant to try this popular regimen. They fear that it will exacerbate their skin’s natural oil production and make things worse.
Many skincare enthusiasts with oily skin have tried it and given some negative reviews. This left us all questioning: is it bad for oily skin? Let’s find out.
Is the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine “Really” Not for Oily Skin?
Yes, it seems like the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine is not for people with oily skin. The reason is it involves layering of heavy creams and oils that exacerbate the oiliness. So, all claims made so far leading to clogged pores, breakouts, and irritation are not false at all.
The 10-step skincare routine focuses on deeply moisturizing the skin. The skincare products we are supposed to use while following this routine contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, etc. Therefore, it appears that this skincare routine is tailored for dry or combination skin. The oily skin naturally produces enough oil to keep itself hydrated. The products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides are too heavy, they clog pores and lead to breakouts. The lightweight, non-greasy water-based skincare products are suitable for this skin type.
The 10-step Korean skincare routine can only be favorable for oily skin if the right products are used. Generally, people with oily skin have no clue what products to use and avoid, they end up worsening their skin condition.
How Can You Modify a 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine for Oily Skin?
It’s super easy to modify the 10-step Korean skincare routine by using oily skin-specific products. Here are a few tips that would help modify it for oily skin:
- Switch to a gentle, low-pH cleanser – Oily skin produces more sebum that’s why it always looks greasy. So it’s important to use the right cleanser that maintains the natural pH level and doesn’t strip the skin’s natural oils at the same time. Whether or not you are following the 10-step Korean skincare routine, look for a gentle, low-pH cleanser. It will effectively remove dirt and oil but would not cause skin dryness or irritation.
- Skip the heavy moisturizer – Remember! heavy moisturizers are just not for oily skin. They are formulated to boost oil production and prevent moisture loss. Therefore, they work best for dry skin and cause problems for oily skin. Opt for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer or gel that hydrates your skin without adding excess oil.
- Try toner with salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is a powerful remedy for oily skin. It’s a type of beta hydroxy acid that penetrates pores and dissolves extra oil. Therefore, you have to look for a toner that contains salicylic acid and use it after double cleansing. However, use it in moderation as it can “really” dry skin out.
- Use a lightweight serum: Instead of using a heavy, nourishing serum, find a product that absorbs quickly into the skin. The serums containing niacinamide or vitamin C are super lightweight and suitable for oily skin. Such serums would help you brighten and even out your skin tone without clogging your pores.
- Replace sheet mask with clay mask – Avoid using sheet masks, use clay masks instead. The clay masks are highly effective in absorbing excess oil and unclogging pores. However, you can not overuse clay masks as they can strip off your skin’s natural oil. If you can not find a good clay mask, use sheet masks containing salicylic acid and other oily skin-friendly ingredients.
- Use a physical exfoliant – Physical exfoliants work wonders for oily skin. They address all the oily skin issues like no other thing. So, you have to replace the regular exfoliant with a physical one. Like any other oily skin product, they can be harsh as well. So, don’t overdo it, use it once a week.
- Use sunscreen with a matte finish – Finding and using the right sunscreen is also important. Traditional or regular sunscreens leave your skin greasy. So, to prevent a greasy look, use sunscreen with a matte finish.
In brief, The 10-step Korean skincare routine is not suitable for oily skin as it involves using heavy skincare products. However, you can make it favorable by switching to lightweight oily skin-friendly skincare products.
